OUR BACKSTORY
A mechanical engineer for 10 years, Tony Wagner, the founder of Open Road Upfitters, uses his technical expertise to design and construct beautiful, custom vans for cyclists and outdoor adventurers — anyone who uses their cargo van for play, exploration, or adventuring.
The idea for Open Road Upfitters (ORU) came to Tony in 2017, when he was traveling around the Midwest and beyond to participate in mountain bike races. Tired of his options — camping or spending money on hotel rooms he barely used — Tony decided to purchase a Ram ProMaster van for his travels.
After several iterations of the van build, Tony eventually settled on a “garage” for his bikes, a full bed, a kitchenette with running water, full electric, a lounge and work space, and a doghouse for his 80-lb sidekick, Jett, all in less than 500 cubic feet.
Tony loved traveling in his van, and many of his fellow bike racers showed great interest in a similar set-up.
So Tony started Open Road Upfitters to help others live his dream of traveling freely and comfortably on the open road.
